Alternative Work Arrangements

Alternative work arrangements, such as teleworking, flex-time and compressed work weeks, are some of the most popular commute alternatives.  Not only do these programs help you save money and time, but they can also help you achieve a better work/life balance.  Teleworking is a particularly fast-growing commute alternative, with almost 450,000 people in metro Atlanta teleworking at least occasionally.  Are you one of them?  If so, start doing it on a regular basis to save even more time and money!

Teleworking
Teleworking replaces travel to and from work with working at home or another location on a full or part time basis. Many employees telework only once or twice per week or they telework full time, going into the office occasionally for meetings.  The average metro Atlantan could save 57 hours (in commute time) each year by teleworking just one day each week – that equates to almost nine full eight-hour work days.  Teleworking is the only commute option that completely eliminates air pollution and significantly reduces traffic congestion.

Flex-Time
Flex-time allows employees to set their own start and finish times for work. In most flex-time situations, there are core hours everyone must work. You still work the same number of hours but decide what time to arrive and leave. Flex-time allows you to avoid peak commute times and organize your time around personal needs.

Compressed Work Weeks
Compressed Work Weeks allow you to shorten your work week by one or more days while working your “regular” number of hours. This is done by working an increased number of hours each day in a shorter-than-normal number of days per week or pay period. For instance, 40 hours in four days (4/40) allows one day each week off or 80 hours in 9 days (9/80) allows one day off every other week.

When I get the opportunity to telework, I am more relaxed at work the next time I go in because I get to catch up on things that are too tedious or time-consuming that the interruptions at work don’t allow for.”
