Carpool FAQs

I don’t have a carpool partner. How can I find one who has the same schedule as me and who lives near me?

Using the RideSmart ridematching service , you can find a carpool partner who has a similar schedule and  resides in a nearby community.

How do I get started?

  1. Find a partner (see above)
  2. Meet your partner(s).  Arrange a meeting in a neutral location – BATMA can help.
  3. Designate a meeting time and a meeting spot for your morning and afternoon pick-ups.There are several free park and ride lots in the metro Atlanta area.
  4. Determine driving responsibilities.
  5. Download and review Tips for a Successful Carpool.

What happens if I ride with my carpool partner and I need to go home because I am ill?

In case of an emergency, the Guaranteed Ride Home Program will get you where you need to be free of charge.

I am a bit concerned about riding with someone I don’t know.  What do you suggest I do to get over this concern?

Getting a car with a stranger can be uncomfortable.  BATMA can help facilitate a great commuting relationship, by assisting in the coordination of a lunch with your new partner in a neutral environment.

Do I have to carpool everyday?

No! You can carpool a few days a week or every day. You and your carpool partner(s) decide the schedule.

How much will I save?
The more carpoolers in your group, the more savings you can expect. Sharing a ride with just one other person cuts your approximate daily commute costs by half. The average carpooler saves over $1,000 a year. * (*AAA estimates of gas and car maintenance) Estimate your savings by using our commute calculator.

What if I have a doctor's appointment or other errands to run before or after work?
Schedule your errands and appointments on the days you don’t carpool. Sharing a ride for just two or three days a week will still save you money and stress, reduce traffic congestion, and improve air quality.

" I started ride sharing two years ago (August 2005) and it has really made a difference in my commute.  First, I have cut my gas purchases in half.  Second, I, or should I say we, love driving in the HOV lane.  Third, I have cut the wear and tear on my car.  Fourth, and a really nice plus, is the fact that I have developed a new friend that I did not have before, you can't have too many friends."
