Vanpool FAQs

How many people do I need to start up my own vanpool?
In order to start a vanpool, you must have at least 10 participants, including the primary driver, and at least one volunteer alternate driver.

What does the monthly rate include?
The monthly payment includes the van, gas costs, full-service maintenance, 24-hour roadside assistance and a comprehensive insurance.  Download a vanpool guide for more information.

How is maintenance handled?
The vendor covers both minor and major repairs, as well as all scheduled maintenance.

What happens if the van gets into an accident?
The vendor has comprehensive insurance coverage that includes Auto Liability (minimum $3,000,000), Comp/Collision, and Uninsured Motorist. If an accident occurs, contact your vanpool vendor. BATMA provides no additional insurance.

How is the monthly fare collected?
The primary driver is responsible for sending rider payments directly to the vanpool vendor, but responsibilities for collecting monthly fares may be designated to any vanpool participant.

Can I make partial payments?
No.  You must pay your full monthly fare on the designated due dates.

I want to join a vanpool, how can I find if one is available and operating from my community?
Review the vanpool map to see if there is a vanpool operating in your area. If there is not a vanpool currently operating in your area contact scott@batma.org to inquire about starting a new vanpool.

Who drives the van?
Commuters like you volunteer to take on the responsibility of driving the van. Most vans designate one primary driver and two or more alternate drivers. All drivers must be 25 years or older, have a standard driver's license and have a clean driving record. The primary driver must pass a credit, DMV and background check as well.

Who can ride the van?
Vanpools are a public transportation service and are open to the general public.

What happens if my van goes under the 10 rider minimum?
RideSmart assists vanpool groups in filling empty seats, but it is the vanpool groups responsibility to help find riders. If seats can't be filled, the group will collectively be responsible for making up the lack of funds due to the missing rider(s) until rider(s) are found – if the van falls below the 10 rider minimum requirement.  New vans are given a three month grace period to acquire the minimum of 10 riders while existing vans are given a one month grace period.

What happens if I vanpool to work and get sick, experience an emergency, or have unexpected overtime?
RideSmart offers a Guaranteed Ride Home program that provides a free ride to your car or home in the event of an unscheduled event.

What tax incentives are available to vanpoolers?
Commuter Choice is a Federal program that can significantly reduce your vanpool costs.
