Walking Tips

  1. If you haven't walked to work before, try your route on the weekend so you can gauge how long it will take you and you can become familiar with your route.

  2. Dress in layers. It's important to start out your walk with appropriate clothing so that your body can easily acclimate to the weather conditions. However, as you progress into your walk your body will begin to warm and layering will allow you to shed some clothing to stay comfortable throughout your walk.

  3. Bring an extra change of clothes. In the summer months it may be helpful to bring a change of clothes to start off the work day.

  4. Wear a fanny pack or backpack. This will allow you to pack any extra items you may need.

  5. Don't forget your feet! Make sure you have a comfortable pair of shoes. Never underestimate the value of good footwear. If you don't own a good pair of walking shoes or boots, invest in a pair to make your walk to work comfortable and safe.

  6. Lighten your load. Be wise in packing your bags or briefcase. Also consider leaving your dress shoes at work. That way you arrive at work in your walking boots or shoes, slip into your warm shoes for the day, and wear your boots/shoes home again.
“I live close to my job…walking keeps me from driving my vehicle when the weather is nice…and if I leave work when it’s too dark to walk, I’ll take MARTA home.  Walking gives me a break, it helps clear my mind on my way to and from work while keeping me toned.”
